Negative prompt

A second prompt naming what you do not want in the picture.

Steers away from what you name; it is not a quality switch

The negative prompt is given to the model on the same passes as the prompt, in the opposite direction. It biases the picture away from those words while the picture is being made. It does not check or filter the finished image. Two things it does well:
  • Naming the failure you keep getting. Anatomy is what usually goes wrong, and hands most of all, which is what the first set of examples shows.
  • Removing something you asked for by implication. If your prompt says “skyharbor” you tend to get airships as well, because the two usually appear together. Put “airships” in the negative prompt and they go, and the harbour stays. That is the second set of examples.
It does not work as a quality setting. A copied list like “bad, ugly, worst quality” names nothing in particular, so there is nothing for it to bias the picture away from.Keep it short and specific, and add to it when you can point at what you are removing. Guidance scales the gap between the two prompts, so the same negative has more effect at 10 than at 3.

No negative prompt: the hands are whatever the model naturally produces from the main prompt. The same request with unwanted hand and anatomy problems named. The model is steered away from those failures, though it is not guaranteed to fix them perfectly.
